Basic set-up - what do I need?

Post by OldFoo »

Hi there and first of all thank you for this site. Everything is set out really clear and professionally and has helped me decide to dive into the world of Sega Naomi.

This is my first foray into buying arcade machines. I'm moving up from owning a Dreamcast as I plan to have my own arcade cabinet one day, but for now I just want to buy the very basics from www.giz10p.co.uk.

May I ask precisely what I would need in order to play Naomi 1 games on catridge?

This for power: http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... oductId=95

The motherboard: http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=133

Perhaps a really stupid question, but this for controls? http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=301

And of course a game which, if I can find either Zero Gunner 2 or Giga Wing 2, I'm gonna get Cosmic Smash: http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=315

I plan on playing on a PC monitor for now, but it doesn't have speakers, so can I fit normal speakers to the unit? Or what is the best item to buy on their sight to get decent sound?

Also, is there anything I've missed?

Really sorry for these nOOb questions as I'm sure you've been asked 1000 times already, but as this is quite an investment for me I'd really like to get it right.

Many thanks once again for reading.

Hi there! Welcome to the forums!

1) The power supply will do nicely

2) The Naomi 1 is a fine system, but if you eventually want the ability to use Naomi 2 games, you may want to purchase it instead. The N2 will also play N1 games.

3) The control panel looks fine, although I can't speak for what type of wiring it comes with... :smt017

4) The first 2 games you mentioned are fairly popular and come at a premium price. Be prepare to spend around $200 each. Cosmic Smash is a common game available at a generally low price.

5) Speakers cannot be connected to the Naomi directly. Like a DVD player, it has left and right audio connectors that hook up to an amplifier.

6) There is one thing that you did miss. The Naomi does not have a mounted joystick interface like most systems do. There is a separate I/O board that connects to the controls and transmits the signals via USB cable. This board also needs power, which also means it needs a wire harness.

Most of these points are covered in the FAQ section of these forums. The information includes pictures and instructions on connecting the system. :smt023

Nah, the only game that looks like it's even worth playing is VF4... but I'd much rather play Dead or Alive 2, Soul Calibur or a 2D fighter any day of the week. Doesn't seem like it's worth the extra money.

And if all works out well, I'll be getting a GD rom, which will mean I can buy all the other shmups I want, including Under Defeat :D

Hmmm, I'll send the guys an email at some point when I'm certain I know what I need.

Yeah, I was expecting that. I've seen some of the prices they go for on shmups.com. But with the hours I put into shmups, it'll be worth the money.

So I will need one of these?

Silly me. For some reason I thought that was on the control panal. I guess I could by this one from the site:

http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=321

But then I'd need something hold it in place. Looks like I'll have to buy a control panal and joystick and control panal from another site then.

I was thinking I could get away without buying an I/O, but I guess not. I'll have to hunt down that capcom Jamma converter then.

Blast! I posted in the wrong section. Is there any way this can be moved to that section?

Just read that Naomi Starter FAQ which seems to cover a lot of it. I'll have to do more research.

EDIT: I've just seen this:

Does anyone think for a newbie like me this would be a good idea?[/b]

What I meant by 'I/O interface' is this type of board:

Ah, this?

http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=138

So, can I just double check I've got this right?

The picture you've shown above is the official standard I/O board?

It is used to read actions from the joystick/ buttons and then sends this information to the motherboard? The video in on the top right is what I use to connect it to my PC monitor for picture?

However I can either use this or the capcom I/O board ( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT ), but the capcom one is preferred because I wouldn't need to power it?

Really sorry for being a pest. I'll admit I'm starting to get a bit spunout now.

Sorry, but why don't you ask Craig direct @ giz10p, he'll be happy to help.

Once I know exactly what I need/ want then I'll be likely barraging him with plenty of emails.

Hey guys, I've just seen this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 2759.l1259

I've contacted the seller to see if they're interested in just selling the parts w/o the cabinet and TV. Having downloaded the 8 extra pictures he's linked, it seems like this should have everything I need to get started.

What do you guys think?
