How to unlock Rival Schools characters?

Does anyone know how to unlock the hidden characters on the US version of Rival Schools 2 cart? I've found some faqs online but they don't seem to match what I'm seeing in test mode.

For example they say:

To unlock free select mode - go to test mode's 'Dot Cross Hatch' and press on the player 1 side UPx2, DOWNx2, LK, HP. Exit test mode and start a game holding the Start button until the character select screen appears.

*However no where in the system OR game's test mode options do I see a 'Dot Cross Hatch' menu/screen.

There is however a password menu in the game's test mode options. This screen lets you input a 8 digit password (which I don't know). And under this it says "Release Character" then lists 8 lines of "???". So i'm guessing you input some codes to unlock the characters or something...

Any help would be appreciated.

there's a code thread in the faq technical section I believe that has the codes listed. Try reading that.

oh nice! ... hey thanks I must have missed these... I'll try them out tomorrow
