A few questions!

Post by OldFoo »

Eya all! New to the scene, though I've been watching the board since I first planned on getting a cabinet. Can't say there's a better place for accumulated Naomi knowledge that I've found.

So I recently picked up a Guilty Gear cabinet that seems to have been converted from a Tekken 4 cabinet. Naomi 1 set up, with a GD rom expansion, of course.

So here's the thing. When I first got the thing, boot time from power on to title screen was about 40 seconds. Recently, though, it's starting to take quite a bit, and what's disturbing me is that the progress meter goes from 1% to 100% three full times before the game starts. There's no problems after that, but I wonder if this isn't going to lead into problems down the road. Any thoughts?

Also, planning on picking up a few more games. Where does the game data save to, and does it stay intact after game swaps? (ie, unlocked characters, ect).

Lastly, it seems I have the Sega JVS I/O in my cabinet. The control panel is a five button set up... what all would be involved in moving to a six button set up down the road?

Any and all help appreciated!

Going from 0-100 3 times is normal.

1st time it is checking memory (relativelty fast)

2nd time it is loading game (SLOWWWWWWW. Depending on game size could be a couple minutes)

3rd time it is checking to make sure game is loaded correctly. (relativelty fast)

The game will reboot after 2 seconds and start

If you leave the machine powered on for a day or so the backup battery will retain the game in DIMM memory for about one day after you power it off

In home use however. The DIMM battery capacity will likely disipate between usages and cause the entire reload sequence

Hope this helps

Very helpful, Skidog. Though it makes me wonder just how long it had stayed on before I got it, that it took nearly a week for it to lose it's memory.

Depends on the age of the battery in the DIMM.

The battery provides power to the RAM when the system is off. This is so when an arcade operator turns the machine off for the night, it doesn't have to go through reloading the game every morning on switch-on. Or if there is a powercut, then playing can start pretty much straight away, rather than you losing all your customers while everything reloads.

All my batteries are dead, but I can't be arsed to pay $$$ for new ones when I change games 2 or 3 times in a gaming session & on a reboot it gives me 5 mins to have a piss or sink another beer.

adding a sixth button should be relatively easy since you have the JVS I/O. it's a matter of drilling a hole in the control panel (if needed) and wiring up the sixth button.

Ha, cool, thanks for the insight, dj_johnnyg.

Yeah, get the feeling I'm going to have to get a whole new control panel instead of just drilling, with the guilty gear setup being the way it is.

Though what's involved in wiring it up? PLEASE excuse my absolute newbness in all of this. Never dealt with any sort of wiring before this cabinet.
