Dimm board error 04

Post by OldFoo »

Has anyone else had this error before? the dimm passes all it's checks and loads/checks the ram as it should but as soon as it reboots and goes to load the game it comes up with error 04. It loads Mobile Suit Gundam DX without error but none of my other GDROMS.

According to the GDROM manual error 04 means 'DIMM board serial number cannot be read out.' where is the serial number stored? could it be battery related?.

I have tested it with other motherboards/gdrom drives and scsi cables so I know it is the Dimm at fault. I have also reseated the top board and tried other known working ram without success.

Error 04 refers to a problem where the system cannot read the Dimm boards's serial number. I don't know why it needs this, but I'm sure it's one of Sega's many security layers that just slows down the whole process.

As for why it's only happening to one game? I can't say for sure, but it may have something to do with the security key for that game. Check the little leads in the chip to see if any are bent or broken.

It doesn't happen to one game, it happens to all but one game.
