Some Naomi's have tri-synced monitors but you're probably talking Net City or Uni cabs after 2004. Before that it's all 31K or you're one of the lucky ones that had a monitor replacement. Either way, As long as it's without burn it's awesome.

31k means 31khz, meaning the beam scans horizontally across the screen 31500 times pr second. With a framerate of 60 screen pr second, which is the norm (60hz) - you get 31500/60=525 lines pr frame.

15k games is about half this, I.e only scans across the screen about 15000 times pr second, resulting in half the vertical resolution.

Mismatch between game and monitor is a no go, as the monitor wont be able to process the information.

That looks just like mine.

I'll assume that it's 31K.

So, how will I know what resolution monitor a game requires?

Most jamma games are 15k. Some mid to late 90's games are 24k, especially Sega and Namco. Many of the newer systems support both 15k and 31k. If you are not sure, just ask on the forums or make a search on the web. :smt024

The easiest way to find out if your monitor supports 15k or other resolutions is to try it out. This gets rid of any guessing games.

Since I have your other cab and they are identical, you have 31k Nanao. I took the cab apart yesterday. US Universals only came with a 31k monitor to my knowledge. Jap New Net Citys are the only one guaranteed to have a Tri Sync monitor im pretty sure. A good way to think about it is:

CGA = 15k

EGA = 24k Games like Mortal Kombat

VGA = 31k 640 x 480

My Astro has a dual res monitor. 15k & 24k. Thats pretty standard for New Astros Citys. I bought a pure flat Sanwa PFX Tri Sync to throw in it because I didnt think Id ever find a Naomi cab. But I got one off you! =) So now Im throwing the Tri Sync in the Uni. I have to change the bezel though so it will match the monitor.

Mortal Kombat (including MK1, MK2, MK3, UM3) is NOT EGA, they are 15khz games. The cause of confusion might be the highish vertical resolution, which stems from the low vertical refresh rate - take 15000 and divide it by something less that 60, and you get more vertical lines than normal.

Ok, thanks for correcting me. I dont know what I was thinking of. What are the common 24k games?

Most, if not all, Sega Model 3 games are 24k. I have a Virtua Fighter 3 PCB that is. Other titles include Daytona USA 2, Virtua Striker, etc.. system16 has all the info :-)

Sorry to jump in but I to am looking at changing my cab from JVS to Jamma. Its a Uni Cab with a standard Monitor.

Is it easier to change the monitor or can the monitor be modded?

If so what monitor should I get and is there any guides how to change it to Jamma?

Thanks

Perhaps starting a new thread for that question is better. Converting JVS to JAMMA does not need a monitor change (most of the time, just rewiring the cab/loom will suffice).
