presumably dead Virtua Fighter 4 cart, dead Nanao MS8-26SU

Post by OldFoo »

I picked up a Virtua Fighter 4 cab the other day, cab was originally a Virtua Fighter, it was 95 bucks as-is, I got it home, bad monitor, things lit up, nothing happened. I tore it all apart, cleaned boards and whatnot, tested voltages, all seemed good. Put it all back together, nothing. I found a Virtua Tennis Naomi cart I had, popped it on, game fired up (I plugged in a PC monitor with board set to 31kz and saw the game working). Tried the VF4 cart again, nothing.

So I'm curious about the VF4 cart, what on it died exactly? Or what is the most likely problem, really just curious. Cart death somewhat rare? Since the Virtua Tennis fired up, it's safe to assume if I buy a VF4 cart off ebay it'll fire up on my Naomi 2 board, yes?

Cab was originally a Virtua Fighter, so it has what I assume is the original monitor, a Nanao MS8-26SU, set to normal res. Got no glow on the neck, fuses are good, going to buy a cap kit for it, curious if there's anyone overly familiar with this monitor that might suggest other components known to be prone to failure on it.

Bad carts is not that uncommon. There are specific IC's on the cart that are very sensitive to voltage issues (5V too high for a prolonged period causes them to fail).

What is the exact problem? What does the Naomi do when you try to boot VF4?

Absolutely nothing. Blank screen, no signs of life.

While the Naomi 2 board was fairly clean, the VF4 board had quite a bit of dust under the vent holes on the board.
