Sega-Naomi

Hey guys,



I picked a naomi 1 board the other day, however, the usb connector on it is a little missed up. As you can see from the picture the port is messed up, and has had to be soldered from the underside. Everything plays fine this way, but it is a pain to always have the usb cable connected. I did notice that there is a second usb port, but it is covered when I put the case back on. My first question is, is it possible to replace the broken usb connector? Secondly, is it possible to just use the second usb port (which would require me to trim back the naomi case so it is exposed)?



If neither of these are viable options, does someone happen to have a extra side board, or broken naomi that could be used for spare parts?

You can replace the usb connector. It will be helpful if you have some soldering skills. As for the second usb connector, it should work if it is connected to the filter board's usb bus. Sega could have left it disconnected.



I'm curious. Considering you can get the usb to work the way it is, is there any real reason why you would be connecting and disconnecting the usb? It's not something that should be done on a regular basis. :smt017

Joshua: I want to have the usb port in original condition if possible. I don't plan to be unplugging the usb a lot but in case I do I don't want to have this long cord always connected.

Facts:



1. You can use the second port but not with the casing mounted.



2. You can replace the original double port, the part is easy to find.



3. The placing of the USB port on the motherboard is an absolute BITCH when it's mounted in pretty much any cab and I recommend everyone to just solder some threads on there instead. Place a panel mounted connector housing underneath the board or something if you don't want the cords there all the time. I never have any problem with that as my naomi setup is mounted on a MDF board and will stay there for a long time.

Where can I find a replacement double usb port?

I live in Sweden and I checked the normal place I buy electronic stuff. I don't know where you live and what electronics suppliers are close to you but USB connectors for PCB mounting is widely available at low costs.



If I were to buy a replacement for my board right now at he first place I looked I'd pay about $3.50/?2.50 and I expect that to be a bit pricey.

Basically, yes. Although I'm not sure you can get just one connector as these companies tend to sell in bulk. :smt102

Well, you could always pull it off a dead PC mobo that has it, as long as the pin config is the same...
