Naomi 2 motherboard arrived faulty... here we go again!

Post by OldFoo »

I bought a Naomi 2 on eBay. Dubious as to whether I was going to pay for a duff item I asked the seller to post images of the working unit. Back they came, so I went for it. My wife actually dealt with it as I was away at the time.

The motherboard has arrived and doesn't appear to work. It powers up, makes all the right fan type sounds, the LEDs come on, the I/O IR is lit.

I had precisely the same issue with a Naomi 1 motherboard. It appeared totally unresponsive and no video output. The strangest thing is that it came from exactly the same seller.

Now, you might think he is selling on faulty units and passing them off as working, you've just been stupid and bought from the same guy twice OR you could think I am not sure what I am doing and just need a basic lesson in Naomi units.

1) I saw images of BOTH units running prior to them being sent. The serial numbers match up.

2) I have a Naomi Universal cabinet and 2 other Naomi 1 motherboards and they BOTH work on the unit.

All the settings are correct (on both the N1 & N2). It is the weirdest thing.

No way can they both have gone faulty in the post - that would just be nuts! Any advice greatly welcome!

Lastly, I have attempted to run the N2 using Japanese BIOS and Gigawing2 cart. All that happens is that every few seconds the CRT in the cab seems to faintly spring to life, then goes pitch black again. It is the faintest of changes and had the lights been on in the conservatory I don't think I'd have noticed.

naomi2 motherboard shows bios screen without any cart plugged, so its the best way to know if your unit is broken or not, power the machine without any cart and do the chips test on service menu. If you paid with paypal i would contact paypal, they will give your money back.

Man thats a pity you havent asked me, as i got a spare naomi2 mb for sale and you know i dont sell bricks.

Hi Alex, I tried without the cart inserted earlier on and no Naomi 2 splash appeared. Did you end up with a Uni cab for your Naomi? If so, what dip switch settings are you using on the front panel. I have all 4 set to DOWN position. I flicked DIP2 to UP to see whether anything would happen and nothing sprang to life.

My wife didn't pay using PayPal sadly. I'm fed up now.

This is a shot in the dark check the BIOS chip and see if he's got it in the right way and not backwards. If it is in backwards your motherboard will appear dead. I got one like that once :smt020

Nope, the little 'indent' is facing the right way. I guess I could swap BIOS and the COMM board - other than that I am at a loss. These units are either really fragile or somewhere along the line something Royal Mail is doing to them is damaging them (some kind of X-Ray device zapping the shit out of them lol).

I was SO looking forward to the upgrade. Anyone in the UK any good at repairing N1 and N2 boards (without charging an arm and a leg)?

Hi parris

finally i bought an universal cab with a naomi2 complete system inside (thats why im selling my naomi2 gdrom setup), i payed a fortune for it 1200 euros shipped in my house, but i wanted the machine since the first day i saw it (8 years ago or so), the machine still hasnt arrived yet, i should have it next week, but anyways i will tell you for the tests that i did :

naomi2 motherboard ONLY with power supply (without cart or io board) and vga allways shows the bios, if you plug the audio you will allways heard the audio of the bios.

If you put a cart in the machine and no io board the game will load and will tell you that you are missing the io board.

If you dont put the vga or io board, just the audio, you will listen the music of the bios while it starts, so its pretty easy to find if your unit is fucked or not, just power the machine with only power and video, if you dont see anything, try to power the machine with just audio, if you dont heard anything, your machine is definelly fucked.

And i would not be worried about the power supply, if the naomi1 works, this will work also.

Im pretty sad to hear you got another fucked unit, i got 4 naomi1 motherboards hehehe and all came ok.

as i told you, when i got the cab i will got your cable, i will let you know when it arrives

Yeah I'd go there first. You could have a bad BIOS. If you do you would get nothing. Been there done that aswell. Good luck :smt020

I only really need 1 more N1 and a working N2 - I'll see what advice is available on the N2 as I've only just had the opportunity to switch it on 10mins ago. Someone might give me good advice ;-)

Apart from that, let me know what price you had in mind for the N2 alone.
