type 2 gun accuracy problems

Hi All,
I'm having problems with a MOK (type 2) gun setup I have... It doesn't calibrate very well (like in the game diagnostic screen, when I get about 2/3 of the way to the edge of the screen the X/Y value jumps to out of range/off screen value ) so you can never shoot anything near the edge of the screen. In the game setup mode there is a cross-hair display, but even after calibration it doesn't track where the gun is actually pointing very well at all, and in-game when I carefully aim in the same place and shoot multiple times the shots go all over the place. It seems that in-game it may be introducing some extra artificial 'wiggle' (for added 'realism'?) but even allowing for that the gun is still way too inaccurate.
I found a doc on seuservice.com that talks about tweaking a couple of the pots on the gun board for switching between MOK and HOTD2. It helped improve the screen-centre setting to a middle value but not much improvement on the edge problem or the actual tracking. The doc also doesn't mention what the other pots on the gun board do or how to calibrate them. I'm not keen on just messing with them in case they potentially could overvolt something.
All the IR emitters in the monitor bezel are definitely sending out IR so I'm guessing they are not otherwise faulty. I'm fairly proud of my 'bright' idea (pardon the pun) of a way to check they do at least light up by viewing them live via the camera on my cell phone, as digital cameras can see IR light.
Does anyone have a clue about a solution to the problems I'm having, or maybe what all the trimmer pots on the gun board do or how they should be calibrated?
Also how likely is it that any little scratches on the front of the gun sensor are throwing it off? Do they need to be kept scratchless to work properly?
Thanks in advance,
Neil.
