Naomi NOOB getting Error 01 *now with big pics*

Hi all, I just got my first Naomi setup. It's a Naomi 1, I just wanted to play a few carts CvsS, MvsC2, PowerStone, etc.
I got the Naomi 1 board, Sega I/O board, sound amp & power supply. Also got a MvsC2 cart today in the mail with it. I've got an Astro City cab and I thought I have everything set up right and I get a grey screen with horizontal lines on it, but I have sound.
I look up some hook up diagrams and they show hooking it up with the VGA cables so I did that (though the prior owner said I didn't need it), I got sound and picture. But my MvsC2 cart is giving me the Error 01.
Ran a RAM test and everything checks out, tried to clear the memory and re-insert the cart and still get the error.
I don't know what's up, the cart was supposed to be tested and working. I don't have any other carts yet (though one should be here Monday or Tuesday) so I don't know if it's just that or if I'm missing something in the setup process.
I've tried to look up answers but I haven't really seen anything that I either understand, or provides a solid answer. Any help is appreciated, sorry if I'm asking a stupid question.
