Sega-Naomi

Ok, so I had this world series baseball 99 naomi cab that I haven't done anything with for ages....so long story short I decided to put my atomiswave in the cab as well...

rewired the cab to accomodate this and all the wiring is good as I just finished re-checking it all for the third time....

so what about the weird 5v thing? I'm getting there, I promise....

so everything comes on as it should and the atomiswave fan kicks on, marquee comes on, monitor powers up, etc, etc. but I get no sound and no pic....so.....

do a bunch of poking around and checking and re-checking and here is my issue...I'm not getting any 5v off the naomi power supply 5v lines. Which seems very weird to me since the naomi works fine(it's running right now-well, the controls aren't working but baseball ran off a different type of control panel which I've replaced with a standard one, and I believe I have not changed the setting in service mode so I'm presuming that's all there is to that)...

so I have another naomi power supply(2 actually) and I test them both and they both give a reading off the 5v line....but this baseball one doesn't.

So, ok, bad power supply; I can live with that....but here is my ultimate question since you fellas know more about naomis than me...

Can the naomi really function perfectly with no 5v whatsoever? that just seems weird to me...And if it can't function without the 5v then what could possibly be causing me to get no reading off it?

someone can shed some light on this for me please?

It is doubtful that the Naomi could function without 5v since this would be for most of the board logic functions. Have you tested the 5v line while the Naomi is connected?

yeah; that's why it's weird...I tested at the harness and at the power supply itself and I'm getting nothing off any of the 5v lines...but the 12v lines seem fine...

and since the original harness didn't have either on it, it's a direct connect to the harness from the power supply so there's nothing in between that could be causing it that I can fathom...

except maybe....and I'm just theorizing here...

but maybe I should splice into one of the grounds from the power supply to the harness as well? I'm just thinking that's the only difference between my test bench(where one of the other working power supplies is) and this one...on the test bench almost all the grounds come from the power supply(all the harness grounds come from it), whereas in this cab none of the harness ground come from there and none of the others are spliced into it either...so maybe that's the issue? Something to try at least I suppose...any other ideas?

And I'm still totally at a loss as to why I'm not getting a reading off the 5v...maybe my multimeter is going out on me....hrmmmm....

ever notice that 9 times out of 10 things that should be very easy turn into a royal pain in the butt? this was supposed to take maybe an hour tops and it's turned into an ordeal-lol...just my dumb luck I suppose.

ROTFL!!! Well, I hit the nail on the head it seems....spliced in the grounds from the power supply and BAM! it's working fine and dandy.

And also, yes, my multimeter is apparently going out on me because I tested it against some known readings on other machines I had in my notes and it doesn't match anymore(and this is the same one I used when I made the notes so it should)...so I guess it's glitched and that's why I could not get the 5v reading...sigh....at least I got it working.
