Naomi 2 + dimm net 3.17 + GD not booting

Post by OldFoo »

Hi.

I have a naomi 2 board that boots cartridge games without problem(tested with VF4 and cosmic smash), but if I plug a dimm and the gd rom, it simply won't boot ; all I have is a black screen, it never goes to the naomi 2 splash screen.

I am using a capcom converter (I/O only) and a NVS4000 power supply(supplying the naomi) so the capcom converter does not power the naomi 2 board. The capcom converter is powered by the jamma part of the NVS4000 though. The gdrom is getting power, I can hear the disc getting read.

Here are the readings I have:

3,35V

5,11V

11,89V

I tried tweaking them(going up to 5,20V), no avail. Tried the Dimm board alone, same problem. Anyone has any idea of what I should do?

I've seen this on a few Naomi 2 mainboards - seems to be a batch of Naomi 2 with faulty IDC connectors which boot Cart games only, and not Dimm boards.

Only way to repair is to swap the IDC connectors from a good mobo. Weird, but a PITA.

Thanks for the reply. Can I use IDC connectors from a Naomi 1 mobo to do the swap?

You can, just remember it's a fiddly job..

Well, I can't get myself to sell a "defective" product and I like me a lil DIY job so i'll try anyway.

Thanks for your answer.

Well, I tried the dimm board with 2 other naomi systems(one naomi 1 and one naomi 2) and there is the same problem ; but the thing is, I managed to boot it before on one of these 2 systems(on the naomi 2). Do you think the dimm is dead? Why won't it boot to the splash screen?

I had the same problem with a DIMM I recently purchased. I Disassmble it. (today in fact) Including removing the DIMM RAM, and the daughterboard. Put it back together w.o. the blue cover. Plugged it in and it worked (sort of)???

Go Figure :smt017 (probaly a loose or dirty connection)

Put it all back together and it a least gets past the black screen and boots to error 26 I if remeber (missing GD-ROM). It's getting late but I will test it with GD-ROM this weekend.

At least I am past black boot screen and then sticking there.

Hope you have similar luck

Bob Presutti

P.S.

On a side note, about two months back, I had a DIMM with visible damage to one of the IDC connectors. Pulled one from a sacrificial link board. Tried to replace it. As Geezer said Good luck with that. Its a finicky part to replace. Hope you have very steady hands, alot of patience, and great eyesight :D

I could not manage to replace it after two attepts. I have one more IDC connector on the sacrificial link board but honestly, with the time it took for two failed attempts not worth it for a standard DIMM. Maybe worth it for a NAOMI 2 MB, but I dunno.

Before you pull off the IDC connector be absolutely sure that is what is wrong. Because once you pull it off there is no going back.

Not sure but it probably means your dimm board is jumpered for satelite mode. Easy to check when removing the metal lid from your dimm board. It's the 3 jumpers to the right. If it's like this then it's on satelite mode:

[. .]. JP1

[. .]. JP2

.[. .] JP3

Just reverse the above to return to normal settings.
