Identifying new equipment

Post by OldFoo »

I recently traded a couple of custom sanwa arcade sticks for console for a Naomi 1 system.

I got my naomi in the mail on friday, and I was really excited, but then I realized that a bunch of the stuff that came with it wasn't exactly what I had seen on the main page, or other pages I have seen. The packing list I got had:

Sega Naomi I/O board

Power supply

Audio Amp

along with some other things I don't remember. Basically, even with the info on the main page I can't tell what is what. If it isn't too much trouble, would any of you mind identifying these parts for me? If so, I'll post pictures soon.

My extent of wiring knowledge only goes about as far as hacking pads for game consoles. Right now, I don't even know how to get power to the power supply or how to wire up the buttons! I can solder and use a multimeter though.

Ok, I have this power unit:

I can plug this into the Motherboard, it is marked where I should do so. however, I don't know where to plug this in to get power from the wall socket. I don't have a candycab or whatever, I will be building my own, so I dunno what to do with this. I've read that you can use a standard PC power supply, but I don't really know what I'm looking for here.

And then there is this thing:

I see USB ports, and what looks like a place to plug in a kick harness or something. Is this what I use to wire the buttons, I'm not sure how to use this part.

I also have this, I think this pertains to the monitor that I don't have:

I have other parts that I can pretty much figure out from the manuals on the main page and from just looking at it, but these things have me wondering.

That is an official sega "Sun" PSU that you can find in cabinets like NAOMI Universal and New Net City.

The strange two pin plug you see that takes 100-110v in is normally connected to a small power distribution board on the cabinet itself which gets power from the wall or your stepdown transformer. (For UK version cabs)

You should be able to build your own wiring from that connector, either by making a cord that plugs into that connector on one side, and into the wall on the other... (requires sourcing that connector) or you could simply whack it off and wire up a new retrofit connector right onto the end.

Keep in mind that PSU will NOT work with 220v without a stepdown, so if you are in euroland you need to put a big power block between it and your wall.

Also... if you do whack that connector off that is going to make it much harder to resell later as an official part later.

That is also an official sega IO board. (NOT the sega JAMMA IO harness)

It's designed to connect to the NAOMI via that "USB" cord, and then you plug the control panel, 5v and 12v power, and the service panel into that.

(You can actually soruce the 5v and 12v power for it off the NAOMI BD if I recall correctly... ask andy)

That is the part for the "real" JVS cabinet setup, but it shouldn't be too hard to adapt to your own cabinet. However, you will need to source a wiring harness/connector for the "big" plug on that which connects your service panel, joysticks, etc. (almost everything but the analog controls)

There is a wiring diagram for this in pdf format out there somewhere... I can't remember where it is though. I'm sure it's linked here on the forums somewhere.

That looks like a service panel from some cab I've never worked on :)

That is going to connect to the IO Board and monitor, however it's not from a NAOMI Universal/Net City... maybe someone else has seen it before.

You are going to need the cables to tie all of this together though... best of luck with that :)

Hope this helped!

That looks like an egret service panel?

ok, so I don't know what a BD is, and why I would need the 5v and the 12v?

Sorry, I'm totally new at this. I appreciate all your advice so far.

Also, could you tell me where I could get a harness or whatever you would call it so that I can attach my controls to this device? I don't know what exactly to call this, but I believe on a CPS2 its called a Kick harness.

Thanks so much for the help.

I think I'm going to just try to find a net city cab or the like, it seems like it would save a lot of time and effort.

Well even if you buy a net city you are still going to have to sort this out :)

The "NAOMI BD" is the main NAOMI motherboard, the big white thing.

The IO Board I identified for you needs two power leads, a 5v and a 12v to operate. You normally get these from a special connector on that SUN PSU you own, but if you don't have the wiring harness for that you can also get it from the NAOMI BD itself.

AndyGeezer could probably spec out exactly which cables you need... but at this point you are going to need "all of them" :)

As far as the service panel goes, if you buy a net city or naomi universal cabinet it's going to be a lot easier.

Normally those will have most the wiring run already and you'll just need to plug your parts in.

However you should still try to understand how everything is wired together... you can download the NAOMI Universal Users Manual from the resources part of the frontpage to this site... in the back that has a full wiring diagram for the JVS+Naomi setup.

Good Luck :)

Thanks, I will take a look at that manual. From what I have heard, getting a Japanese cab is the best way to go.
