Sega-Naomi

Hi guys,



Today I got my first Naomi cab, some of you might remember it from Ebay recently.

Anyway, as you can see from the description it says that the motherboard isnt working. I talked myself into thinking that it would be an easy fix and a cheap Naomi system. Today when I got it back i plugged it in and heard what sounded like a bell ring from the speakers but the screen was blank, I plugged in my PC monitor but still nothing the screen is just grey.

Presumably with a duff motherboard this is normal?



Also inside the cab I expected to see a GD-ROM and DIMM board having read on System16 that Shootout Pool and Shootout Pool Prize were both GD-ROM's but this is a cartridge!



I couldnt see an IO board anywhere, what I did see though was a coin control unit for the payout and this seems to be the IO board as it says JAMMA on the PCB where the connections plug into. Am i right in thinking this or completely off the mark?



Ultimately what I want to do is to get the cab up and running as a Naomi Universal cab, I take it that I can just get an IO and working motherboard and wont then need all the extras that are for the prize money side of things.



That takes me onto does anyone know where I can get a white control panel to replace the Shootout Pool one and also a set of full length side bars as when I take off the coin box on the side there will be a big gap in the side bar where the big box was. Would all of this stuff that I take out be of any use to anyone?

Surprisingly, Shootout Pool is not even on the main software list. I've seen the cabinet before, but not on the inside. I always thought that this game was a cart, but was unsure of it's later versions.



As for your I/O question, if you can't identify it for sure, you may have to provide a picture of it to make sure.

I own both a Shootout pool prize cabinet, but I also converted to run Shootout pool.



Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but the Naomi in the Shootout pool prize is not a regular Naomi, sure it looks like a Naomi, even smells like a Naomi, but it isn't.



It is a Naomi CRX, it has some different serial controller to communicate with the hopper PCB which is in the back on the shelf.



If the hopper hardware is not working the game will not boot, one of the reason why I tracked down the mega rare Shootout Pool (which is a lot better game), as it works on a regular Naomi mainboard, uses the same controls, and also has extra buttons, more tables..



This cab is 100% dedicated, it isn't Jamma in the slightest.



The dedicated I/O board is under neath the control panel.



The control panel plastics was never a spare part, and you can not no longer get the leg frame covers, if you could you then those spare parts alone would cost more than what you paid for the cab.



To convert it to a regular Naomi would cost you a small fortune, as you would need control panel lower, upper, latches, I/O frame holder, digital wiring looms, control panel metal... If bought new from Sega you'd be looking at around ?500+VAT

before you get rid of the cab, can you please take a picture of the rom or at least give us the serial number written on it ?

I think I'm going to run with it and get it going. At the minute its in bits, the plastics are soaking in the bath to get all the sticky crud off, once they're clean then I'll take the frame apart and clean that out.



Tomorrow I'll take some pics of the PCB's and get them posted, maybe someone can tell me what bits I dont need and which parts can run as part of a basic Naomi setup.



On a good note I tested the Sanwa monitor earlier, the picture is nice and crisp and steady when I run the PC through it, and I have managed to source a control panel surround that should be sent out over the next day or so.
