So I have third strike board that died on me. I'm fairly certain its the cart/battery issue that these boards seem to develop over time.
I wrote capcom and they informned me that they no long support arcade board repairs, but suggested a local repair shop.
Is this even something that can be repaired? I though once that battery goes dead I'm out of luck.....

On CPS3 boards, the security code is located on the swappable black cart. All you have to do is get the same game again and replace it since the board itself is still in working condition.
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to repair a CPS3 cart after it has died. We have to wait until someone has dumped the code before there can be a dedicated fix.

joshua3dg : thanks! I don't think I've ever seen the game sold as a seperate cd/cart package, but if I could find that it would save me the cash of buying a whole new system. I take it that the japanese and US boards PCBs work with either region of Cd/cart....
bamarquez226 : thanks for the link, I'll shoot him a line!

True, but how close are they to failing is the real question with those on ebay.

You shouldn't have to worry about that. As long as the security cart is working, you can replace the battery and add another 5 or so years to it. You can't buy them new, so this is the only way.

well I touched base with mr. westerfield. (great guy by the way, thanks for the contact info) it looks as if once the cart is dead, its really dead.
I was going to get another board, but I'm worried about how to set up a new battery on it without killing it (or me!) I'm hearing that you have to do it while the board is running......is that true?

That's one way to do it. Unfortunately, it would be difficult to solder a battery with the board in the way. :smt081
The method I'm familiar with is using a temporary power supply to keep the memory alive during the replacement of the battery (away from the mobo). The temp power can be a bench psu, or another battery. You put the temp power inline with the battery, then remove the battery. After it's replaced, remove the temp power and PRESTO!

Pardon me for butting in, but what's this about the CPS3 boards? Does the same thing happen with the CPS2 boards, cos I'm planning on buying a few from E-Bay?
