Sega Planet Harriers sound problem

Post by OldFoo »

The right cabinet on my 2 player Planet Harriers is having sound problems, the back speakers don't work, and now the front ones have quit working. I assume the cab has a sub, I can hear sound/voices out of it.

I swapped sound boards and still had the sound problem. Should I assume the problem lies with the main board assembly? I checked voltages and they were fine. If I tear it apart and check connections and clean it, there should be no issues caused by disassembly, should there? No security rom thing that I'll screw up? I figure no, but I'm so paranoid about it I thought I'd ask.

Start with the easy stuff first... Check the wiring to the speakers and check the speakers for continuity first before going back to the boardset.

At first, I want to say you board is totally fried and that I'll give a tenner for it lol :smt010

Nah, obviously not... but when talking about Hikkis, I would suggest you use EXTREME caution when dealing with the main unit. BGA solder joints really hate to see the board get bent...

Trust me it is the most fragile stuff Sega ever made, sooooo powerful but sooooo fragile.

Why don't you hook up another system that has RCA(Phono sockets) to check to see if the speakers/amplfier are fine.

If you get sound, then the Hik is at fault, if not then amp is at fault (could also be the volume pot, but if you remove the wiring from the amp for the volume control it should be on full blast!)

After fiddling around with the game, swapping audio amps, connectors and whatnot, it appears the rear speakers on the right player side are non-functional. I connected the left player cabinet rear audio out to the right player rear speakers, got no audio out, when I connected the right player audio out to the left player rear speakers, there was only one audio channel. I'll delve into it more, just not enough time right now to really figure it out.

I did remove the right player board assembly but it was mainly to clean it, I'd cleaned the machine a bit when I bought it, but never super cleaned the fans on the board cage, they were pretty gummed up, and there was some heavy coatings of dust in a few places. I didn't pull the PCBs apart, just dusted them off and removed the PCB on the plate from the cage, then removed the fans and cleaned them, as well as unclogged a few of the stopped up vents on the cage. When I put everything back in the machine, the front right speakers now worked. Again, I'll dive into the rear speaker issue more when I get the time, though the rear right side speakers really don't seem to be working (connected them to left player side, no sound). Might be a connector issue, might not.

I hate how spacial limitations can be a buzzkill on collecting, but hell, I guess I can suffer, as I doubt I'll find another 250 buck Planet Harriers machine in my immediate area again. That sort of find usually happens anywhere but here (Arkansas).
