How to check memory on DIMM boards?

Post by OldFoo »

I have several .net dimm boards.

I have one that is v 3.03 and 512 MB ram

I check this on Chihiro system and in system info screen it clearly states 512 MB ram

I cannot find a similar menu on NAOMI to check acutal DIMM memory. Maybe I am missing it or in DIMM test mode I need to pay attention to something that I am not.

Most of my other DIMM's are 3.17 and I found a exerpt from a post from geezer (geezer's name seems to pop up everywhere)

"Tri-Force Type 1 and Chihiro Type 1 use a dimm board with custom 3.03 firmware. I've put naomi programmed dimm boards and they haven't worked, seems the 3.03 firm has something extra in it, flashing to 3.17 made them not work."

This seems to be dinfitely the case. Once flashed with 3.17 get error 22.

So a couple of questions?

1) How to I check DIMM memory on NAOMI?

2) How to flash 3.03 firware to make some of these DIMM's compatable with chihiro?

Thanks

Bump. Anyone???

I would throw these DIMM's in my Chihiro and check them there but as posted they all have 3.17 and that will not runin Chihiro.

Anyway to determine how much mem is in these

(one had a 5.12 sticker but I know it does not have 512 in it)

Others have 256 stickers, some have no sticker. (can't rely on the decal)

Thanks

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your question, but why not just open up the DIMM board, and physically check the DIMMs? They nearly always have an indication of their type and capacity on them.

Hi Cageman,

I think you got the question correct.

I guess that is one way. I have several DIMM's I want to check and was looking for way to check in NAOMI system test for mem capcity

The closest I can tell is in DIMM test watching the count up

For 256

I think 1F000000 = 128 on each DIMM

if each count too 1F000000 then that would be 256 total

For 512 3F000000 = 256 on each DIMM

if each count too 3F000000 then that would be 512 total

Or something like that

Even better would be something simialer to Chihiro test mode where in test mode it acutally displays DIMM capacity. (problem is I can't run the 3.17 dimms in my Chihiro)

to check dimm memories dimentions I use a triforce type 3 and

test quality and dimention with it.....

remove memories from dimm and put on triforce.....that's it.......

If you have dimm 3.17 you can't go back to 3.03....

If you have dimm 2.XX (net version or not net version but with biggest main board with VX-works stiker on it).

I don't know if there is a gd rom update disc 3.03, I know about 3.17

2.17 but not 3.03

Actually, they need to be 512MB to work on Chihiro/Tri-force.

But they need to be 3.03 or higher (the network code was introduced at 3.03).

4.01 compact flash firm doesn't work on Tri/Chihiro (it works for GD-ROM but not for Flash drives) :(

All 2.xx dimm boards can be upgraded to 3.17 or 4.01

Plus if you google my name I come up everywhere.. nightmare.. lol.

Darn, No way to dowgrade from 3.17 to 3.03 :smt011

A couple of weeks ago I just upgraded a net dimm w. 3.03 :smt010

If I would have know I would have left it alone :smt013

I did plug the 3.03 w. 256 (the one that is not 3.03 anymore) into my chihiro, tried to load VCOP3, Ghost Squad and HOTD3 and as andy mentioned after loading stated not enough mem. Went into test mode and it did state 256.

At least I have one 3.03 dimm w. 512 :D

(really wanted one more spare)

I've got about 5-6 3.17 net dimms

I really just want an easy way to figure out how much mem is in the 3.17 net dimms.

Whats the problem 3.17 dimm will work fine on Chihiro and Tri-force (providing it is 512MB).

COOL!!! I did not realize that. I just saw your post (expert above) that 3.03 had something special in it and after upgrading to 3.17 they did not work anymore. I will try them again over the weekend

O.K.

Has a little time to experiment this weekend

Geezer, once again you are correct

3.17 Net Dimm works perfectly fine as long as it has 512MB RAM

(tested GS, HOTD3, and VCOP3)

3.17 gives error 22 on boot with only 256MB

For 3.03

"Tri-Force Type 1 and Chihiro Type 1 use a dimm board with custom 3.03 firmware. I've put naomi programmed dimm boards and they haven't worked, seems the 3.03 firm has something extra in it, flashing to 3.17 made them not work."

Chihiro will boot with 3.03 and only 256 MB ram w.o. error but totally useless as GS, HOTD3 and VCOP3 all need more than 256 MB

3.03 will boot, start to load the game(s), then give 'not enough mem' error with only 256MB

Once you flash/upgrade 3.03 to 3.17 there must be something in the firmware to stop the boot process from proceeding w.o. 512MB
