Corrupt Display

I booted up my Naomi 2 for the first time to get hit by a double dose of trouble.

Image

First thing being the checkered screen. You can't see it in the picture, but it is also flashing, making me think its a video syncing issue. The picture is taken from a widescreen lcd monitor, but I was also having this problem on my standard CRT monitor that I have set aside for the Naomi 2. I didn't see any swollen caps, bad traces, or excess dust anywhere on the motherboard or cart.

You may have also noticed the error 01 in the picture. :D

So anyways, I turn up with all these problems on screen whether or not I have the cart. Could these issues have a common source lurking somewhere behind them?

Checker flag issue. Ken told me it has to do with BGA joints going wrong. Sounds like your dustbin has a new friend :s

I bought this Naomi 2 on ebay without anything in the description mentioning these problems. Since it's not a simple fix I just emailed the seller and hopefully I can get my money back.

After carefully examining the motherboard I didn't see any physical damage to any traces, capacitors, etc. Well I hope this isn't a common fate amongst Naomi 2's. I'd still like to own a working one for my cab.

It is sadly, I've seen few units doing this

Very common on Naomi 2, Naomi 1 carts should still function, but Naomi 2 ones won't. Open BGA on the second GPU

I've never had a problem with BGA's - but would jump on the chance to try to fix it if I did.. What about using a hot-air station on the chip (or under unless it has other components there) to reflow the balls?

Heck, that would be a candidate for trying a cheap heat gun for repairs. :D

There are videos on YouTube on how to do that.

It all depends on how much money you have in that system and if you think you can afford to throw the money away if it doesn't work.
