NAOMI bought on UK eBay - probably broken :(

Post by OldFoo »

Hi!. Topic says alot, so let me start by saying that i have no experience in arcade hardware whatsoever. So please be patient, we all have to learn sometime ;)

A few months back i bought a Naomi board and Virtua Striker 2, 2000 from an English guy on eBay. I received it just fine. Hooked it up carefully to my tv and amplifier and powered it on. Back then i was using an old PC PSU, and the Naomi system powered on just fine, but there where no picture or sound. I then got a new and better PSU that seems to work just fine, and all three voltages output correctly, but there are still no picture or sound.

The system powers on, loud as h... and both LEDs are on (Green and Red). I have connected the Naomi to my LCD tv using an ordinary VGA cable. I have also (of course) tried to switch on and off the No. 1 Dip Switch.

I am using the very same VGA cable that i use for my Dreamcast with an original SEGA VGA box. So i would guess that the signal coming from Naomi is pretty much the same.

Here i have made a diagram showing how i have hooked up my Naomi.

Atm. there are no controller connected, nor is the sound connected to my amplifier, but that shouldn't matter.

The I/O board is afaik an original SEGA ver. B.

I've also tried to take the system apart to find out if some animal died inside and short-circuited the whole thing. Unfortunately no... would have been pretty cool though :)

Here is all the info i have gathered on my Naomi so far:

Serial Number: AAAE-04B3386

Bios: EPR-E 21578

Jumpers inside:

JP1: 2&3 are connected

JP4: 2&3 are connected

DIP-SWITCHES 2-4 are OFF

I believe thats all i can tell you. Any help will be much appreciated!

Also, i cant return it to the seller in UK. At first he seemed to care, but after i gave him positive feedback (jup, i'm THAT stupid sometimes) he didn't seem to care at all, and haven't replied on any of my emails.

Anyway should you not be able to help me i know a guy here in Denmark that will test it for me. Maybe he can get it working? But i sure would like to spend the shipping cost on something else :)

Thank you.

I know this is simple but I had a problem similar. Check the BIOS and see if it is inserted correctly. If it is in backwards you will ge no picture or sound but everything will boot up :smt020

Yeah forgot to mention that, i have tried to take out the bios and put it back in just to check if the connection was bad. Maybe the bios-chip is dead then?

Also it might be a good idea to add, that when i say no picture, its not just a black screen. My tv shows a black screen but with "No Signal" in the lower right corner.

Hook the A/V cables up to a stereo to make sure you have no sound. IF you don't have sound, check the little capacitor between the battery, EPROM, the 8 pin EEPROM, and the SRAM chip labeled IC29.

If that cap is leaking you'll see an oily mess on the board and corrosion on the solder joints. When that cap leaks it eats things. You'll probably find it ate a trace or 2 under the socket of the 8 pin EEPROM. When that happens the big Altera chip can't read its run time code from the EEPROM and the NAOMI will sit there like an expensive brick with a couple of pretty LEDs stuck on it. ;)

Lol :D I have tried to hook it up to my amplifier, but there is no sound. I guess it is possible that demo sound has been turned off? I could try to make a "coin input" button and connect it to the JAMMA cable. It should make a sound if a coin has been inserted right?

The IC29 is this thing right? http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e236/ ... 1219846254

It looks fine. I have also checked the other side of the board and it also looks good.

Yup, that's it.

Can you get a close up picture? Does your camera have macro mode?

Hopefully you can see the image here http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ic29wa8.jpg

Lousy photobucket freezes when i try to upload large images.

Yup...

That cap is leaking. See that crap on the big negative lead that comes off the top of that cap?

You'll need to desolder the capacitor and the socket on the 8 pin EEPROM then clean the board real well. Once you do that, check continuity between that EEPROM and the Altera chip. I think you'll find a bad trace there causing the problems.

30 gauge Kynar wire wrap wire is great to use when patching traces.

I really hope thats the only thing wrong with it. So i guess i need a new one of those "IC29"s, what are they called? Hopefully i should be able to get them somewhere in Denmark :p

As soon as i have received a new one of those ill try to replace it and clean up the board. I'll let you know how it turned out. Thank you very much for your help! :D

Probably not a problem with IC29. You won't know until you get it booted and do the self tests.

I'll document the pin connections between that Serial EEPROM (the little 8 pin chip with the paper label on it) and the Altera chip tonight when I get home from work.
