You didn't need to remove IC29!

HUH!? When I asked if I could just let it be you replied:

NO. It needs to be taken off the board ASAP. (As Soon As Possible) Disassemble it and fire up the soldering iron to remove it.

Well... I guess I can always solder it back on.

I found a desoldering guide today that involves using the desoldering pump and wire. I will try that tomorrow.

I was referring to the memory backup capacitor!!!

Alveida wrote:here are my two cents :

plug the machine with the cart without anything more plugged (io board), attach the sound output to some speakers and the vga out also, plug the machine and wait atleast 1 minutes cause sometimes naomi takes some time to start (I know its not 1 minute but after that you can be sure isnt working)

ok so here comes the important thing

if you dont listen the music of the bios booting, you can be sure the board is fucked, you can not be sure if your screen is ok or not, but you can be sure sound will allways output.

About the eprom error ppl told you : if the eprom is fucked, the machine starts and shows an error : "mainborad malfuncion"

so this is not your problem, your problem could be the cart is fucked or so cause the machine wont start without a cart

Well, I can tell you from experience that the NAOMI can and will boot without making the startup noise. As for the setting that caused it, I'm not sure. I reinitialized the backup memory and the startup sound worked again.

If the little 8 pin EEPROM is messed up, the NAOMI will be as dead as a brick. I"m not talking about an error with the 40 pin EPROM, but rather the 8 pin EEPROM that holds the run time code for the Altera FPGA chip. Please get your chips straight.

Nice what about pin 6?

Sorry, it was VERY late at night when I did that... When I get back out to the shop today I'll trace pin 6 too and edit the post.

OMG!!! :) Haven't taken that one off yet... But what IS the IC29 called? I mean i can't be that expensive so i'd better order one, just i case i messed this one up when desoldering it.

EDIT: And by "memory backup capacitor" you mean that battery thing right?

NO!

Sitting in the middle between IC29, the battery socket, the 8 pin EEPROM, and the BIOS EPROM is a small round cylindrical memory capacitor. It's labeled .1F 5.5v

Judging from my pictures there is nothing there. I'm not home right now so i can't check. But what about that IC29 thing? Does it need to be replaced? I mean it would it be a good idea to switch with another one since this one is leaking.

I will check for that 5.5v thing tomorrow i trust that its there somewhere when you say so :)

The thing you have outlined is the capacitor.

IC29 is the chip below it in the picture.

Post has been updated.

Pin 6 is N/C (No connection)

Doh! The thing i have outlined on the picture is the thing i thought was IC29 ;) Its the one thats leaking and the one i have removed :) So i need a new one of those capasitators right? Its all starting to make sense now :D

Just to clarify things:

I have to remove two things. The capacitator that i thought was IC29 (actually C29) is already removed. And the 8-pin chip next to it? Then i need to clean up the board and solder some new wires from the 8-pin chip to the altera chip if they have been eaten. That sums it up pretty good right?
