Naomi Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millennium Error 25: issue

Post by OldFoo »

So I have a Naomi GD Rom configuration running "Capcom VS SNK 2 Mark of the Millennium". The system powers up I hear the system beep along with the Naomi splash screen and the chimes. The memory check comes up (while this is happening I hear the CD-rom Drive moving and seeking properly) Once the memory hits 100 % the unti start to load the CD Rom Data. It will some times make it to 1%, another time it will make it to 5%, 75% before it reports the following error

Error 25 "Can not access the GD Rom Drive"

another time it will load the game Completely but the last severt time that has not been the case.

What I have done.

1.) checked cables and power connectors. removed the Top unit form the main Naomi board (4 screws) and re-seeded the board.

2.) Taken the CD out and cleaned the CD (no major scratches)

3.) taken the CD rom unit out and cleaned out the dust from the inside of the unit.

4.) Reversed the SCSI cable ends, Reseed the cable at both ends.

Any suggestions, are we looking at a bad CD rom Drive, is there somthing inside that can be checked, should I just bag the CD-Rom unit and get a new one?

any info would be greatly appreciated

One likely reason might be power related. Have you checked your voltages while the Naomi is running? This could explain why the problem is intermittent and inconsistent. :smt024

I am I testing from the Naomi Board and the CD-Rom Drive.

What shoud I be seeing on both CD-Rom and Naomi unit in terms of proper voltage?

Likely the disc - the data is close to the rim of the disc, unlike normal CD-rom's. I had this problem with a GD-ROM once, and it was a REALLY tiny scratch/dent that did it. I had the GD-ROM profesionally resurfaced - problem solved.

You could always get a really cheap game to confirm that the problem is not the drive.

I did a cleaning on it once and the game worked. I will try to do another cleaning on the disk again. also look at another cheaper game to test.
