Naomi convertion question (VGA & USB control)

Post by OldFoo »

Here I am again :) This is my first ever delv into the world of arcade machines, I try to find most of my answers using search but there is not a huge ammount of info out there, either that or I dont understand it :P

I managed to convert my Virtua Striker 2 cab into a 6 button MvC2 cab over the weekend, no biggie but I was chuffed :) and its a frikin great game :) anyho whilst getting my hands dirty I had a few idea's but just wanted to know how viable they are.

I dont want to strip the machine out to turn it into a Mame cab as I do want a funtional coin operated Naomi however I would like to use it as a mame cab every now and then if possible and looking at a few of the connectors and the information I have already gathered here was my thinking.

1/ The Naomi Monitor is VGA 640*480, I have a old laptop running mame which I can set to 640*480 I thought I could just set the res to 640*480 and connect the Naomi monitor to the VGA out on the lap top... this did not work... any info as to why would be nice..

2/ The sound is just sterio, I connect this to the lap top and it worked... sweet as..

3/ I have read the control pannel is connected to the Naomi board using USB, is it possible to connect it to the laptop and use the pannel as a controller on the pc...

My thinking is that I can simply slip a laptop in the cabinet if I want to Mame without disturbing the original working os the cabinet.

Thanks!

There is enough info on this site and its forum, believe me :-)

About your questions:

1. I do not know what monitor is in your cab, but in order to connect a normal VGA signal, the monitor needs to be able to handle 31khz. What is your NAOMI set to? It can give you a hint as to whether your monitor can support 31khz. Check the position on dipswitch 1 on the NAOMI (ON=15khz, OFF=31khz).

2. ok

3. The controls are wired to an I/O interface. The I/O Interface is connected to the NAOMI by means of a USB cable. The interface on the NAOMI is NOT a standard USB interface like the one your PC uses. It is actually called JVS. It just uses standard USB connections. You cannot connect your PC to the USB wire that is in your cab. See post below for a solution :-)

You can attach the controls easily using one of these.

Thanks a lot cageman, I figured it was 31 cos the dip was off, I just set a PC to 640*480 and hooked it up and it was perfecto! The laptop I tried the other day was a Vista one and the driver was all, scan for this dual monitor that so I figure that was why it wasnt outputting anything to it.

Anyho just loaded up the PC version of guilty Gear X2 #Reload on the screen, having to use seperate controller mind, and it was stunning.... I am, or was, a resolution whore but its supprising the vibrancy and quality these monitors pump out even at such low resolution. Also playing MvC2 on the Cab is a far better than the PS3 version.

And nice one romshark but unforuntatly that wont work, whilst MAME will get played I primairly lookin to turn it into Street Fighter 4 cab and this will not accept 2 keyboard inputs, only 1 player can play via keyboard and player 2 must use a pad or the likes, a problem I faced with my X-Arcade Tankstick however this was overcome by my using the PS3 adapters so the PC see's them as 2 individual controlers, I think I may have to buy a board from Gremlin soloutions to do what I need to do.

Thanks all for the advice!

There is a way to use a keyboard for both players in the PC version of Street Fighter 4:

Not sure how it works, though, as I use the XBox 360 version. Maybe I'll try the PC version eventually, as it'd be easier / cheaper than hacking 2 360 controllers.

thanks for that, tbh I want to make it idiot proof, simply plug in the usb and away you go, I tried that business out for my Xarcade stick and it works but its a pain in the ass... I've sorted it now by picking up 2 Cthlhu PC/PS3 control boards which I will wire into the middle of the controls. This will also allow me to run my PS3 through the cab as well as PC, blazblue, KoFXII here we come.. :)
