GD-ROM help
:smt006 Hello everyone I looked through the tech forums for like an hr and was unable to find any info on this so here goes. I have a GD-ROM unit with a bad laser. I have read that it is possible to swap it out for a dreamcast laser. My question is does it have to be a specific laser for different revs of the GD-ROM unit. I have heard that some GD-ROMS have different controller boards that can only be paired with certain lasers. One last thing my GD-ROM unit has two numbers on it the first is 610-0617 right underneath it on a sperate sticker is 001109E0. Thanks in advance for to everyone who takes their time to post and help me out.
Don't have any info on taking the unit from a dreamcast, but spares are available:

I replaced one with a DC laser once...it worked fine, although I paid no attention to the laser model types at the time...guess I just got lucky hehe(or maybe it doesn't matter, I dunno honestly).
But the point is, yes, it did work. I replaced the whole assembly though not just the laser unit itselt fyi.

the older gdrom drives you can swap the whole assemble and pcb from a dc, the new gdrom drives you have to swap just the laser assembly, and use the new pcb.
i have repaired several gdrom units.
why sega never put a "Spindown" after title load is beyond me. (it doesn't ever read the disc after its loaded into dimm memory)
